Latest Quilt

Yahoo finally finished this quilt tonight while watching tv. I have had it to the hand sewing on the binding stage for weeks. But with Isla’s birth and my brothers death I have just not had time or the inclination to sit and stitch.

I started this quilt not long after Antionette became pregnant. I thought it was a cute quilt that could be used for either a boy or a girl and the best it used up heaps of scraps!

All I have to do now is to make a quilt label! But I have a deadline…… Isla will need it soon as its her floor rug and we all know how quick time goes these days. She will be on the floor and crawling before we know it so I had better get it done soon!

Oh just in case anyone is wondering… the pattern is called Sugar and Spice and was in one of the Patchwork and Quilting “front covers” book 2.

Introducing Isla Jade

Well its official I am now a grandmother. My daughter Antionette and her fiance Joshua had a baby girl on Friday the 31st of July 2009. Isla Jade was born at 10.53am (after an amazing 4 hour labour), weighing in at 7lb 2 0z and 48cm long (19 inches).

My New Sewing Cabinet and New Sewing Room

Well after some frustrating months I finally have my new sewing cabinet. The first one that came was a pile of junk so I complained bitterly and now have a new one which is so much better! Thank you Horn Australia for replacing it..... go back to assembling and dont offer the RTA flat packs..... cause they are second grade!!
Anyway here are the picks of my new cabinet and new sewing room.

MY FIRST TIME OF QUILTING ON QUILTING FRAME

One of the girls in the Janome group I go to has recently bought a Swiftquilter quilting frame and Janome 1600p quilting machine. The following are pictures of my first go on the quilting frame and the finished quilt. Oh the quilt is Orange Crush which was a freeby mystery quilt pattern from Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville site .

This is day one.

This is day two and all finished. Just taking it off the frame. I look as happy as a pig in mud!

The finished quilt hmm well not quiet just had to do the binding.

Well today I turn 40! So I thought I would share what I did and have received for my birthday.

Last night we went out for tea to the Thai Restaurant. Oh it was so yummy.

I received a couple of my presents last night because my hubby was going to work at 5am he and the kids gave me my presents early because he didnt want me to have to wait all day until he got home at 6. So what did I get......... a PANDORA bracelet. The kids gave me some charms for it one with a K and one with an A on it. Hubby told me I have to wait for Valentines day until I get some more charms for it.

Last night I got a lovely pair of gold earings from my aunt and uncle. They are twisted and just lovely (the ear rings not my aunt and uncle).

This morning I got to open the gift box that arrived from my sister and brother-in-law from Brisbane. Check out the invoice pouch where the card was put that was on the box what a laugh...............

And the following pic shows the lovely yummy scrummy things that were inside the box!

I also got personalised number plates for my car. SEW 40 sew well thats the only way I know how to spell sew or should it be so? Oh well sew is what I do all the time and 40 well what can I say? No use being in denial LOL.

And how spoilt am I? I belong to an online yahoo mail group called CRAFT and we have a birthday club where we send each other "squishies" envelopes with fabric in them. I got to open 14 envelopes this morning and look at what I scored.....................

Australia Day Long Weekend.

I don't mean to go for another long winded posting BUT its been a long weekend and I have done lots!!!!

First of all I will start off with Saturday. We went out to visit my folks at Moura as they have friends up from Broken Hill. So it was nice to catch up with them.

Over the past week we have had huge rain fall. In some parts they had minor flooding as they received so much rain in such a short space of time.On the way out to Moura we managed to miss most of the storms and massive rain clouds. We could see the rain in the distance it was raining so hard in some places. Anyway we were driving along and watching a storm/cloud form and it was just amazing watching it go really black and then it just errupted. It was hard to photograph but managed to get it.

Not sure if this photo really did it justice. It was amazing though.

We had a lovely night in Moura catching up with mum and dad as well as the Dungys. They are dads friends from the Army days. They had lost contact many many years ago. However as a part of dads surprise 60th a few years ago I tracked them down.

SUNDAY:

After double checking that the boys stuff was all ready for them to go back to school I ventured into yep you guessed it MY SEWING ROOM. I started fiddling around with a quilt that I partly made and had started quilting at retreat last year. It is another one of Jan Phillips's workshops. See the link on the side bar for Jans website. This one is called Freedom. Its all about free cutting using just the rotary cutter. NO RULERS! No I wasnt drunk when I made it.... the seems are all wavey and crooked Thats why its called freedom! I decided not to square up the quilt but add to its style by leaving the edges wavey. Jan also showed us how to do her freedom quilting that she does. I just couldnt get the hang of it. It required me to go slow. Ever known me to go slow? So I decided to just use the free motion quilt foot and basically just pretended I was doodling on paper.

Its more a bed topper or wall hanging. I plan to hang it on the dining room wall to add a bit of colour to the house! hehe everyone will need to leave their sunnies on when they come in!

All I have to do is finish hand sewing the binding down. It was fun to do and very different!

MONDAY:

Today I finished another UFO. Gee I am being good with my new years resolution so far!!! This brings it to a total of 3 UFO's finished. Well partly finished! The tops are done! HAHA that means finished to me!

Anyway this quilt is another Dissappearing Nine Patch quilt. This one is made using all breast cancer fabrics. I am going to finish this one off very soon as it will be easy to quilt as its not very big. Only knee rug size.

The Expanding Bag

Well today I used my brain and made a bag without using a pattern. Adi if your reading this and its not your birthday day do not continue!

Anyway one of the girls at works birthday is tomorrow and I decided to make her a new work bag. She usually brings her stuff to work in one of those green Coles or Woolworths shopping bags. So using the dimensions of one of these I have made her a bag using Purple which is her favourite colour. BUT made a little twist. I put tabs on the side of it so that when the bag is not full it can be made smaller but when she needs to pile lots of stuff into it she can make it bigger. Check it out..............

New Sewing table top

I have been wanting to do something with my sewing table so that my sewing machine would be level with the table. I have seen many new tables that I would love to own but my current table is attatched to the wall and it still works fine. I thought about cutting a hole in the table and lowering my machine but I felt that it would then be too low. I then thought about buying the table that Janome has designed for my machine. But then I would cut down too much room in my sewing nook. But I like to have my machine to the front of my table. So that didnt work either. So I designed a table top that would just sit straight ontop of my current table that was shaped to go around my machine. I took this to a cabinet making business and for $170 they made me exactly what I wanted. Loads cheaper than the tables I was looking at. So check it out............

Latest Sewing and wot not

Today I finished a bag I started last weekend. Its a Laptop bag. I wouldnt recommend the pattern to anyone! It was really confusing and not very thorough. I ended up just doing my own thing to get it finished. The first photo is of the font of it, the second is the back and the third is inside the bag. Inside it has 3 pockets. It also has another zippered section just under the front flap.

Last weekend I finally got around to finishing my Celestial Hearts quilt top that i started at CQ Patchwork retreat in September 08. I have yet to decide how to quilt it. Jan Phillips the designer actually hand quilted hers but I dont think I will be attempting to hand quilt this one! You can see Jans at her website http://www.quilttherapy.com.au/

Ok next on the agenda we have a photo of a quilt that I finished ages ago. OOOPPSS mean quilt top. For some reason all my quilts get completed into tops and never seem to progress from there. I keep telling myself one day I will quilt them. By the time that day comes maybe I might own a quilting machine LOL

Humberstone Family Reunion Christmas Dinner

Tonight marks the first time in at least 16 years that the three remaining Humberstone children of Harry and Lyn Humberstone have been together in the one place at the one time. Its the first time ever that Lyn (my grandmother) has had all her grandchildren in the one place at the same time not to mention the 22 grandchildren she has! What a fantastic night to have everyone together.

Well tonight they wanted to do the same agian with Beau mum and dads poodle they have now. So the following photo was the two girls reliving their childhood! Beau was the perfect angel and sat very still!

Feeling ripped off

Well I have learned NOT TO BUY from http://www.hotdiggitydog.com/. Why do you ask? Well I ordered the following fabric :

I also ordered some nice brown paw print on black background to go with this piece. I ordered the fabric for a friend who wants me to make one of those stable bags I make.
This is the fabric that arrived:
Can you see the slight difference? Its bright blue background looks nothing like the black background of the fabric I had ordered. So I contacted the store owner and she said she would send me the black background fabric at a reduced price of $12 but only when I have paid the postage to return the blue fabric! I reminded her that it was not my mistake I was sent the incorrect fabric. That seeing it was her fault I should not have to pay out more money to get what I originally ordered. Yep thats right she wants me to pay the postage to send the wrong fabric back to her then wants me to pay the postage to send the correct fabric back to me!!!!! And she wont send the correct fabric until I send the incorrect fabric back! Now because she in is Amercia and I am in Australia we arent just talking about a couple of dollars. It will cost me at least $10 to send this fabric back to her then she wants me to pay the $12 which is the cost she claims it will be to send the correct fabric back to me. Makes it a very expensive YARD of fabric!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I wanted was a yard of pug fabric to make this bag for my friend. Now I am $49 out of pocket with fabric I will never use and a seller who is not prepared to fix up her own mistake! I am so angry.
So if anyone knows where I can get some of this pug fabric on black background can you let me know. Oh dont suggest hotdiggity!!! Its a Michael Miller fabric titled pug. Oh and if your interested in some blue background pug fabric I have a yard of it as its not use to me as it does not match the other two fabrics I purchased to make the bag with!

MY WEEK OFF

Well today is the last day of my week off! I am devastated! Had a pretty productive week sewing wise. Nearly completed ANOTHER disappearing nine patch! This time its all from breast cancer pink ribbon fabrics. Should be pretty when its finished. I thought my mum how to make this simple pattern too. SSHH dont tell my dad but I showed her how to order from Hancocks of Puducha too! hehehehe

I have also been working on the Orange Crush mystery quilt from http://quiltville.com/orangecrushmystery1.shtml I have completed the first step and look forward to step two. Here is step 1 which is 150 four patch blocks that are 3.5 inch square.

Today I made a Stable Bag. Was a very difficult pattern to follow so ended up whinging it!

Disappearing Nine Patch Class

I am a member of the Port Curtis Patchwork Class. I voluntered to teach the members the Disappearing nine patch quilt technique. What a fun day it was. IT was amazing to watch the different combinations of the quilt appearing. Check out the photos of some of the quilts in progress. Its amazing how different they all look when they are made the same way.

This one is going to be amazing in red white and black. The middle square of the nine patch block was the red colour. The four corners of the block were the black with white print and the others were white with black print. Very effective hey!

This one is made using 3 different fabrics...

This one was made using the same background colour throughout and scrappy blue squares.

Doesnt the black squares on this one come to life! It was amazing watching this one grow. It will look amazing when finished.

This next one is going to be totally different again. This lady had two lovely turtle prints she wanted to incorporate into a quilt. YOu can see how we ended up placing her fabrics into the nine patch block (before cutting). The effect is going to be a stripey quilt! As the blocks come together the print fabrics are going to form a stripe accross the quilt and doesnt that aqua blue fabric just look like water!

Disappearing Nine Patch

Hello everyone firstly I apologise as its been so long since I have updated my blog! Since the last time I have finished two quilts! I have totally finished my 30s disappearing nine patch quilt and OMG I stippled it! First time I have ever stippled a quilt. It has turned out to be a large single bed sized quilt. I stippled it using a pretty pastel coloured verigated thread. The second quilt I finished was also another disappearing nine patch (DPN)in only two colours. I also stippled it however found it easier after someone suggested I use stippling gloves! WOW what a difference they made. Oh and it might of been because it was a only half the size of the other one.

This one is my 30s fabrics dpn. I just love it.!

Next one is my lap size one. I used Kona Bay roses fabric with black muslin.

Noah's Ark

Today I made a baby quilt for the young girl up the road. She is expecting her first baby in July. Went to her baby shower today and had a nice time. I got the quilt made just in time. However I did cheat I machine sewed the binding down due to lack of time and also felt it would be more durable. Its quite a funny theme considering the amount of rain we have had. The saying on the quilt is "It rained for 40 days and 40 nights!" Of course its a Noah's Ark themed quilt. RAIN RAIN RAIN GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here in Gladstone Central QLD it has been raining non stop for three days. Yesterday we had a wild storm that dumped a heap of rain on us in a short space of time. Check out these photos to show you the impact the deluge has had!

This fence here has been knocked down by the water. It is the boundary fence of the airport. That river flowing through there is usually just a very small creek.

The pic on the right is of the same creek above but on the other side of the road. It actually came up so high that it flooded across this road. One house on the left out of shot actually had about a foot of water under their house.

Picture on the left is Police Creek near the Big W complex. Those trees are usually high and dry as they are on the side of the creek!

The picture on the right shows the speed the water if running. The fence there goes down under the bridge above and divides the footpath from the creek bed! You say what footpath! Yes there is a footpath/bike pathway that usually goes under the bridge in the picture above!

The pic on the left is the footy field behind our Kmart shopping center. The river you see in the fore ground is usually just a very very small creek! But as you can see its turned the footy field into a lake!

The pic on the right shows the path that leads to the walk way under the Police Creek bridge, well actually it doesnt show it LOL cause its under water! You can tell how deep the water is by looking at those palm trees!

Fixed My Mistake

Well I couldn't let this quilt become a UFO. So I have unpicked and fixed up the mistake. What mistake you all ask as you couldn't see it. It was in the greens on the left hand side. I only had 3 greens and then the reds started. All the other had 4 greens then the reds. So consequently the strips on the left were one row short! SO I unpicked between the last green and the first red and added another green row in. See if you can see the difference:

The fixed version is the smaller pic on the left hand side. Sorry i couldnt get two pics exact same size so you could see the boo boo. LOL

Sunday Superbowl Bargello

Well its Sunday in Australia and even though we dont celebrate the Superbowl my aunt and I decided to join Bonnie from Quiltville Chat in the Superbowl scrappy bargello sewing day. The US girls are probably just waking getting ready to sew and to watch the superbowl.

Here are some photos I wanted to share of Gail and I making our bargellos. I had a slight hiccup with mine right at the end however think it will be easily fixed.

The first photo above is of Gail and myself sewing our bargellos together. Hehe you can see mine behind me hanging on Gails curtain.

Gail has steamed ahead of me and alread done her first border and also part of her braid border. Psssttt ssshhh you know why she is ahead of me..... she sewed until 4am this morning! When I arrived at her house this morning she was still sleeping and I went into her sewing room and OMG I found all her strips sewn together!!!

Anyway here are some pics hope you enjoy.......

This is my scrappy bargello. Each strip is different but I organised them into colour groups. I have made one mistake though, can you see it?

On the right here is Gails quilt. Its so scrappy and so fantastic. The photos just dont do it justice. The photo shows the first border on and the braid border in progress.

This is me cutting out my strips from the tubes. Do you know how hard it is to smile for a picture and trying to cut at the same time with the rotary cutter. I wouldn't suggest anyone try this at home!

OMG another bloomin' project!!!

OMG I have gone and started yet another bloomin' project thanks to Bonnie from Quiltville http://quiltville.com/carolinacrossroadsmystery.shtml Between now and her next mystery she has decided to do a one day quilt called Scrappy Bargello. Its for next Sunday when the super bowl or whatever it is in America is on. Being an Aussie I wont be on at the sametime but have decided to make it anyway. BUT LIKE do I really need another project!!!!???????? NO WAY OF COURSE NOT!

On the positive side its all from scraps! Check out my mess everywhere in my sewing room today: I have piles of colours everywhere!

Recyled Denim Bag

After seeing Sharon from NZs bags she has made from recycled denim I decided I just had to do one. My one has a sewing theme. There are two nine patch blocks that are 3 inch square that have mini plastic safety pins on them as though they are ready for quilting. On the other side I embroidered I LOVE SEWING with my embroidery machine. I also have used some gold tone sewing buttons on that side too. It was so much fun creating this unique one of a kind bag!

Australia Day

Well everyone it is Australia Day long weekend in Australia this weekend. Its meant to be a time of rejoicing and celebrating our countrys birthday. Its a day that families should get out and about togther and have a picinic or something groovy like that.

What will we be doing? Well the other 5 inhabitants of this house will no doubt be planted in computer chairs staring at their computer screens playing WOW. What will I do??? Well think I will sew!

Last weekend I made a design board. I used 4 meters of felt. Cut them into two lengths of 2 meters and sewed the two pieces together. I then put a hem on the top to slide a rod through. THen I placed 3 large cup hooks into the wood part around the doors in my sewing room. I then hung it up there and wammo a design board just like that. When I had finished with the design board i rolled it up and used those blue plastic hook/clips that you put on quilts when quilting. They held the design board really well and that way I got to leave my quilt inside the roll.

Here are some pics to help explain what I am trying to describe!
First one is of the design wall when its rolled up when not needed. The quilt stays inside it.

If anyone is wondering, NO behind those doors is not my stash cupboard! I wish!!!!! Its actually my laundry!

The next pic is of the design wall when its down. The quilt on it is my dissappearing nine patch made from 30's charms squares I got from a good friend Sharon in NZ and some from Lissa in NSW and some from Marg Fulton - no not the cook from QLD. I love my net friends! Thanks heaps girls!

Update On Arrick

Arrick has his arm out of plaster now. It will be just a matter of time and healing until its totally better.
I had a win with my arguement with Pacific Palms Motor in at Marcoola Beach. They finally agreed to give us our money back on the accomadation we had paid.

Well after a few drawn out days and lots of twoing and froing from the hospital Arrick had a cast put on his arm today. We had to cancel our holiday plans to the Gold Coast when he first injured himself so we decided on the Sunshine Coast. Well now due to the doctors wanting to do more xrays etc next week we now have to cancel the Sunny Coast holiday.

Oh by the way Pacific Palms Motel are the most empathetic people I know. The gave us a full refund on our accomadation NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A***holes wouldnt even give us part of our accomadation costs back! They kept the whole lot!!! Yep the whole lot! I had paid for the whole entire 5 days of accomadation and not just a deposit. Gotta mind to keep the booking and just not show up! At least they cant let the room out to someone else and earn double for it.!

Anyway back to the little man in question here is a picture of him with the temporary cast they have put on him. Its huge! Its soooooo heavy too. He has it for a week then we go back and they will remove it and do more xrays and decide from there if they put another one on him.

He looks so cute. Its so hard getting his clothes over the cast so he is wearing one of my singlets!

Its amazing how quick they learn to susbtitute! He can now use his left hand perfectly to operate the computer mouse!

These pictures are of my son Arrick who is only 7 but likes to sew when I am.He has his own machine and table and sets himself up next to me when he feels like sewing.

Well seing this is such a good idea and a good way to show off stuff thought I would add some more photos.

This quilt is called Pansy Passion and it is a few different quilts of Jenny Haskins combined into one.

This quilt is called Old World Quilt. It is for my nana but as of yet I have not been able to give it to her as I have not seen her. Hopefully will see her next month to give it to her.

This quilt was made for my daughter for her 18th birthday. Antionettes favourite colours and also the theme colours she had for her party are green black and purple (yeah its actually a purple colour not blue).

Benny is Alana's (my youngest daughter) pet python. NO he aint a snake he is a python and NO he doesnt bite. Benny recently got a friend her name is Stevie. She belongs to Alana's boyfriend. Maybe in a few years time they will have babies - hmm Benny and Stevie not Alana and her boyfriend!!!! i aint ready to be a grandmother to a human yet!!!!!!!

well gee where do I start. I have been trying to work on a bargello quilt in blue tones but oh man I have so lost the motivation to do anything with it. We (a bunch of girls I met at the local Janome shop) now get together on a Saturday morning once a fortnight. We had been going to the shop and making a set item in a class. So we decided we would continue it at our homes when the shop stopped having Saturday morning classes. Anyway back to where I started we decided to do a bargello quilt as our "group" project however the week after we started I started the co-ordination of castle and chrisco hampers at work so for the next 6 weeks was busy with that. So I have not had a chance to get togehter with the girls to continue doing anymore on it. They are mostly finished theirs and mine well hmm lets not go there.

Apart from that I still have on the go a couple of UFO's but we wont go there either. I did sign up to do Bonnies mystery quilt from http://quiltville.com/carolinacrossroadsmystery.shtml but havent found the motivation to start it HOWEVER I have started playing with some 5 inch 30's fabric squares that I got from a friend in New Zealand as a part of a christmas swap. I am using a pattern found at ...... http://quiltsatcs.blogspot.com/2007/04/disappearing-9-patch-tutorial.html So far I have made 7 blocks and they are so quick and easy to do take a look..........

This is a close up of the quilting I did on my embrodiery machine! MMMMMMMM my hubby is cooking tea tonight and the smell of roasting chicken has just reached the computer room.......

Anyway the quilting design is about the size of my hand just to give you an idea of size.

This is my Harry Quilt. I have called it the Harry quilt as it reminds me of my grandfather. He use to wear all plaid check flannel type shirts. I have had these fabrics in my stash for a while now and we recently hmmm well August is recent isnt it??? made this quilt at my Saturday arvo group I go to. Its only "struggle" rug size. Think I am going to put it in the car to use as a picnic rug. OH I quilted this one myself using my Janome 350 E embroidery machine which is my new toy this year. Hmm need to rephrase that as my new toy is my laptop and my new desktop computer. Hehehe girls gotta splurge on new toys!

Watermelon Quilt

Ok everyone the watermellon quilt is completely finished now. Its been quilted (hehe I cheated and it professionaly done on a long arm by a lady in Rockhampton by the name of Glenda Aitkin. She only charged me $130 to do this queen size quilt using a stippling design.) The binding is also done hehe usually this takes forever but I was a good girl and got it done quickly. I love it if I say so myself.

This is the latest quilt that I have finished. Well technically it aint finished as its not been quilted yet its just the finished top! LOL I am going to have this proffessionally quilted as it will be a big job to quilt.

This is my eldest daughter Antionette on her Grade 12 Prom night a few days ago. She looks so grown up! Thank god she isnt going to schoolies week on the Gold Coast! At this stage she is unsure of what she will do next year but would like to go to uni and do primary school teaching.

This is a signature quilt/wallhanging I made for my sisters wedding. All the wedding guests signed in the white stripe sections and it has made a great memento of her wedding day.

My pride and joy! I love my new sewing machine bought with my hard earned money that was refunded to me from Johnny's accountant LOL I hope to buy another new machine next tax time! It will be a Janome 350E and its purely an embroidery machine.
See the cute bits organiser that hangs in front of my machine. It keeps all my gadgets close. I was thinking of making up a pattern for it and selling it on ebay but I am hopeless at writing instructions!

This is the second quilt that I assembled. I didnt make all the blocks just a few. It was made as a group effort for a special little boy by the name of Shannon Lawlor from Hoopers Crossing in Victoria. He had a very very rare form of cancer and unfortunately died in June 06. This blocks were sewn by a group of ladies from all over the world and then I assembled them. The quilt was then raffled to raise money for the cancer foundation as a thank you from Shannon. Sadly Shannon lost his battle before I got the quilt finished. Rest in peace little man.

Hello everyone I am Kerrie-Anne most just call me KA. I am nearing 40 mum to 4 kids and married to the same man for nearly 18 years! How amazing is that in this day and age. Think I deserve a medal dont you?
Anyway I love to do patchwork and quilting. I currently have a few WIP's and only 1 UFO.
I am working on a Block of the month (BOM) from Patchwork Pumpkin www.patchworkpumpkin.com.au Its called Our Country Home. I am also working on a quilt called Weaver Feaver. I am doing it in pinks and greens!! I also have on the go another quilt which is by Jenny Haskins called The Colour Purple. It is designed to be done on an embroidery machine but I am doing it on my Janome 6600P just to prove you dont need an embroidery machine to do it. I am hoping to buy a Janome 350E next year.
